Overview

IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching (BEd) is a professional qualification aimed at students who want to pursue a teaching qualification for grades R to 3. This IIE qualification will produce highly skilled, innovative teachers for schools around the world. A range of other education-related careers will also be open to you. If you do not want to start with a higher certificate you can start your teaching career with the IIE Higher Certificate in Childhood Care and Education.

Course Outline

DURATION

Face-to-face: This is a four-year full-time qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at IIE Rosebank College. Face-to-face lectures take place during the day on weekdays at the following campuses: Braamfontein, Pretoria CBD, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Durban.

TEACHING PRACTICE

The Teaching experience module is to give students an opportunity to observe Mentor Teachers, their roles and duties, documentation, assessment system, classroom management, teacher co-operation and development, school system and school within the community context. They will carry out the practical applications of the teaching principles, theories and concepts they have acquired. Teaching experience is a compulsory module that is done each year of the four-year qualification. IIE Rosebank College will pair each student with the respective school to ensure that the experience is as diverse as possible. During these sessions, students will be evaluated at the respective school by their Mentor Teacher, Lecturer or Supervisor. The timing of these sessions is carefully mapped at IIE Rosebank College and students are required to complete 22 weeks of teaching experience within the qualification.

THE BREAKDOWN IS AS FOLLOWS:

  • Year 1: 1 week of observation and three weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 2: Five weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 3: Six weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 4: Eight weeks of Teaching Practical

The IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching has an attendance rule associated with the qualification, namely that student attends 80% of the classes (lecture) for the stipulated modules. For more information, refer to the Information regarding Attendance for modules aligned to School-based Work Integrated Learning (i.e. Teaching Experience) on The IIE Faculty of Education programmes document and to the Work Integrated Learning Policy. 

LECTURE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (FOR 2022 AND BEYOND)

Students will be allowed access to the main school-based Teaching Experience per relevant year if:

  • they have met the 80 % lecture attendance requirement for each of the identified modules as is aligned to Teaching Experience for that year.

Dealing with Exceptions:

In cases where students have not met the 80 % lecture attendance requirement for one or more of the identified modules as is aligned to Teaching Experience for that year:

  • Students will be expected to achieve a combined 80 % lecture attendance (i.e. average) across the identified modules on the condition that no single module attendance falls below 70 %.

Students who fall into this category will submit a one-page motivation for Teaching Experience access to The IIE's Brand School of Education Campus Programme Manager for consideration by The IIE's Brand Head of School: Education in consultation with The IIE's Central Academic Team.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements    

NSC: Bachelor pass with    

  • English: 50%
  • FAL*: 40%

Additional Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Education:

English

  • The degree is delivered in English and this is known as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) in the BEd degree. All applicants must have achieved a minimum of 50% in English on their NSC/SC/equivalent qualification – whether as a Home Language (HL) or First Additional Language (FAL)

First Additional Language (FAL)*

  • All applicants to the BEd programmes must have obtained at least a Level 3 (40%) at the NSC or equivalent level, as a HL or FAL, in the language they are seeking to study as a FAL* in the BEd

OR

  • Must demonstrate language proficiency (LP) in the selected FAL BEd language/s. To be admitted via this option, candidates are required to pass a language proficiency test in the relevant language.

* FAL: The language you seek to study as your First Additional Language (language offers are campus dependent)

IMPORTANT NOTE:

ALL applicants, regardless of route of entry to the BEd programmes, are required to meet the indicated additional language requirements for English and the selected FAL.           

English:

In the case of those students who have already:

  1. graduated from an appropriate initial higher education qualification or
  2. achieved a Senior Certificate with Endorsement or admitted via Mature Age Exemption,

the English requirement may then be waived on successful completion of an appropriate proficiency test.

FAL:

Those who do not meet the FAL requirement on their NSC/equivalent must demonstrate proficiency in the selected FAL

NC (V): Bachelor pass with

SC (a): Bachelor pass

Appropriate initial higher education qualification/s: A cognate Higher Certificate OR  cognate 240 credit Diploma OR an Advanced Certificate OR 360 credit Diploma or Degree may satisfy the minimum admission requirements to degree studies.

If discipline not cognate at least 20% of credits must be academic literacy or numeracy related.

Senate Discretionary Admissions

Mature Age Exemption    

Candidates having attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with a Senior Certificate with a minimum of 40% in at least four higher or standard grade subjects, at least three of which shall have been passed simultaneously and one of which shall be a recognised higher grade subject; OR Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.

An USAf Exemption Certificate is required and in addition candidates must write and pass the English and the FAL proficiency tests if their grade 12 results do not meet the English and the FAL requirements.

Senate Discretionary Mature Age Admission for students with a Senior Certificate with endorsement    

Candidates 23 years and older at point of registration, with an endorsed Senior Certificate can be accepted on a senate discretionary mature age admission. Candidates must write and pass the English and/or the FAL proficiency test if their SC results do not meet the English and/or FAL requirements. Their academic progress will be tracked and reported at Senate. An USAf Exemption Certificate is not required.    

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)    

Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Recognition of Prior Learning and Qualification Completion Policy (IIE010).

In the case of this degree, RPL will include proficiency testing in English and an FAL of which the candidate must obtain at least 50% in each test.

USAf approved cognate foundation programme    

Candidates who have completed an USAf approved cognate foundation programme from a registered and accredited provider may be admitted. 

Candidates must write and pass the English and the FAL proficiency tests if their grade 12 results do not meet the English and the FAL requirements. An USAf Exemption Certificate is required - the Office of the Registrar will facilitate, on behalf of the student, an application for degree admission to USAf, once the student has provided proof of payment to USAf.

Transfer students    

Candidates who have successfully completed at least 120 credits on the first year of a cognate degree may be admitted. Candidates must write and pass the English and the FAL proficiency tests if their grade 12 results do not meet the English and the FAL requirements. However, if a student completed less than 120 credits, the admission criteria on the NSC or equivalent apply.

OQSF qualifications    

Candidates with an OQSF Level 5 cognate qualification may be admitted, provided the OQSF qualification has at least 120 credits at NQF Level 5. Candidates must write and pass the English and the FAL proficiency tests if their grade 12 results do not meet the English and the FAL requirements. An USAf Exemption Certificate is required   -   the Office of the Registrar will facilitate, on behalf of the student, an application for degree admission to USAf, once the student has provided proof of payment to USAf.

One Module Outstanding    

Candidates who have one module outstanding to complete an IIE Higher Certificate which is appropriate for admission to a degree, may register for the degree on the condition that they will register for the outstanding Higher Certificate module along with the first year of the degree.

If a student does not pass the module, they will be allowed to register again* for this module and any modules failed in the first year of the degree; however, they will NOT be allowed to register for the second year of the Degree, or any subsequent year, until they have passed the Higher Certificate module.

* Registration is also subject to the maximum completion times rule in IIE010.

Important Information

  • To be awarded this qualification, a minimum final year mark of 50% for each module must be achieved.
  • Qualification such as a Higher Certificate, the English requirement may be waived on successful completion of an appropriate proficiency test.

POLICE CLEARANCE

IIE006: Work-Integrated Learning Policy:

All students undertaking an academic qualification with a school-based WIL component will be required to have a valid police clearance certificate (PCC) or an Afiswitch Criminal Check Certificate as accepted by SACE, on commencement of their Teaching Experience component in a school.

Course Accreditation

The IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 482-credit qualification on Level 7 (SAQA ID No:  96408). On successful completion you will receive a Degree in Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching from The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), a leading registered private provider of higher education in South Africa.

This qualification is also fully recognised by the Department of Basic Education for the purposes of registering as a teacher and teaching in a South African school.
